Help Support the Legal Use of Independent Contractors in the Language Services Industry
Are you a tax-paying freelance interpreter or translator? We need your voice! Please scroll down to sign our petition to leaders in Washington to help support the use of independent contractors in the language services industry.
An Open Letter to Members of Congress:
Capitol Hill is presently considering a bill that will create excessive paperwork requirements for businesses that use the services of independent contractors. The bill also will mandate inordinate penalties for failing to file the correct documents.
This bill, S.3254: Employee Misclassification Prevention Act, is intended to prevent businesses from intentionally misclassifying workers as contractors, rather than employees, for the purpose of skirting the responsibilities of an employer. However, its result will actually create an environment in which businesses will be deterred from using the services of independent contractors, which make up the majority of those employed as interpreters and translators.
We, the undersigned, ask that you and your colleagues decline the passage of this bill, in order to avoid hardships for language service provider businesses and independent contractors alike.
Please note: By signing this open letter your name may be used in electronic and print media to show the strong support for the legal use of independent contractors. Your contact information will be kept confidential.
